Research support for the safety assessment of a deep repository was implemented on the basis of sub-contracts concluded under a framework agreement valid from 2014 until 2020. The project encompassed the following research fields: behaviour of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste (RAW) in the deep repository environment, the behaviour of storage casks for SNF and RAW in the deep repository environment, the behaviour of dampening and filling materials, design of storage wells, the behaviour and characteristics of the rock environment and transport of radionuclides from the repository. The project results were one of the main inputs for the site assessment which reduced the number of sites from 9 to 4. A total of 44 sub-contracts (projects) were implemented.
