The MoU aims to establish long-term cooperation in the preparation of “pink” hydrogen production using nuclear energy, as well as collaboration in other related fields.

The planned cooperation between ÚJV Řež and KHNP seeks, inter alia, to assess the feasibility of nuclear-based hydrogen production under the conditions of the Czech Republic and to prepare the framework for the development of a pilot project. The first concrete outcome of the MoU will be the preparation of a preliminary feasibility study evaluating both technical and economic viability and recommending an appropriate business model. It is anticipated that a contract for this phase of work will be signed by the end of this year.

In the future, coupling hydrogen production with nuclear power sources could represent one option for enhancing the flexibility of nuclear generation while simultaneously contributing to the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industrial sectors, such as steelmaking.

Within its H2 & Smart Business Division, KHNP specialises in the development and implementation of advanced technologies for hydrogen production, storage and utilisation, as well as smart infrastructure and the integration of renewable energy sources. The company’s objective is to support the global transition towards sustainable and decarbonised energy systems. KHNP is currently constructing a 10 MW nuclear-powered electrolytic hydrogen production facility in Korea, which is currently the largest of its kind in the world.
