Our history began on 10 June 1955, when, following a decision of the Government Committee for Research and the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy, construction of the Řež site was launched. From the initial tasks of fundamental research focused on reactor theory, neutron physics and radiochemistry, we have come a long way in Řež. We have moved towards providing engineering and technical services and developing solutions in the fields of nuclear safety and reliability. We support for the economic operation and lifetime management of key components of nuclear power units in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and over the past 20 years also for power plants worldwide.
Our people and facilities embody not only the continuity of seventy years of research and development, but also expert knowledge in materials engineering and technical engineering, together with practical experience gained through the services we have continuously provided to the energy and industrial sectors throughout our history. Thanks to our active involvement in international expert organisations, we are able to bring fresh perspectives to established methodologies and procedures—and to verify them in practice.
In our state-of-the-art laboratories, we are currently seeking answers to questions related to the efficient operation of today’s nuclear power plants, while also addressing the safe deployment of future technologies, including small modular reactors. Our services cover all phases of the nuclear power plant life cycle, from preparation and design through to decommissioning.
ÚJV Řež is also closely associated with the development and production of radioactive products for modern medical imaging. The fifty-year tradition of radionuclide production in Řež began in April 1974 with the radiopharmaceutical Iodine-131 (iodohippuran) for kidney diagnostics. Today, ÚJV Řež has five registered radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET), and preparations produced at our three PET centres are used each year to examine more than 45,000 patients. We reliably supply 18 hospitals in the Czech Republic on a regular basis and, occasionally, a further seven facilities in Slovakia.
Our focus on research and specialised services for the energy sector, industry and nuclear medicine is synergistically supported within the ÚJV Group by our subsidiaries Centrum výzkumu Řež, VZÚ Plzeň, ŠKODA PRAHA, Radiomedic, and most recently ENERGOPROJEKT PRAHA. Together we are stronger, and the breadth of our expertise is, in many respects, unique.
“Seventy years is a milestone, not a goal. New tasks lie ahead of us—support for future operations, small reactors, further development of radiopharmaceuticals, and stronger links between research and industry. We believe that with the team we have and the tradition we build upon, we are well prepared for them,” summarises Chief Executive Officer Martin Ruščák on the occasion of this anniversary.
As ÚJV Řež enters its eighth decade, it does so as a respected and economically strong provider of solutions for the safety and reliability of nuclear power in the Czech Republic, and as the first choice for customers in both advanced and emerging markets regarding technical consultancy, innovative solutions, and the supply of services and products for the energy sector and nuclear technologies.
Happy anniversary, ÚJV Řež!
