The Department has been established to conduct radiopharmakinetic and radiobiodistribution tests on small laboratory animals (mice, rats and guinea pigs).

The facility holds the Certificate of Good Laboratory Practice covering activities defined as follows: biodistribution studies and partial toxicological studies performed to develop pharmaceutical preparations containing compound tagged with radionuclides.

The facility is accredited as utility premises for keeping laboratory animals (animal quarters) and it has been granted permission to use sources of ionizing radiation, specifically 99mTc, 111In, 131I, 125I, 123I, 90Y, 166mHo, 177Lu, 67Ga, 153Sm, 18F, 211At, 11C, 94mTc and 124I.

To measure the samples, the laboratory is equipped with the MC1256 spectrometer featuring a large-volume metering well - consequently, it can investigate biodistribution of all substances tagged with short-lived radionuclides available to be measured as gamma emitters (up to the half-life time of 60 days).

Newly developed radiopharmaceuticals can be subject not only to the orientation tests (pilot tests, comparative tests, etc.), but also to tests carried out as a part of pre-clinical testing required in case a radiopharmaceutical agent is to be registered.
