The department is focused on applied research of barriers of radioactive waste repositories and assessment of their long-term safety. Research works include analyses necessary to optimize the radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management systems in nuclear power plants in connection with the proposed new nuclear fuel cycles with generation III and IV reactors. The knowledge obtained is used to solve the similar problems such as research of CO2 storage or research of technologies for area improvement after uranium ore mining.

The main activities include:

  • Evaluation of migration properties of the rock environment, research of processes running in the rock environment, in-situ experiments
  • Evaluation of migration properties of materials of the field of near interactions and research of processes
  • Evaluation of the degradation degree of engineering barriers of radioactive waste repositories and research of processes
  • Safety analyses and modelling
  • Analyses of new nuclear fuel cycles
  • Research of area improvement after uranium ore mining
  • Public communication on acceptability of radioactive waste repositories
